If you Google “how to lose weight,” you will likely be inundated with millions of results involving diets, workouts, cleanses, pills, and everything in between. Losing weight can be tough and unfortunately, there’s no magic solution. Fortunately, there are natural healthy things you can do to help you on your weight loss journey that doesn’t involve breaking the bank.
More than one-third of American adults are obese, which means a substantial proportion of the population is at increased risk of obesity-related diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. Tea has a long history in the world of traditional medicine as a natural remedy for an array of health problems including diabetes and depression. Studies have revealed that different types of tea contain various anti-inflammatory and anti-obesity compounds, which can contribute to disease prevention and weight loss/maintenance.
As any tea drinker can tell you, there are many types of tea. When it comes to weight loss though, green, black and herbal are your best bets. Black and green tea contain flavonoids (natural compounds known for their powerful antioxidant properties). Green tea has more simple flavonoids, particularly catechins, and has the most significant effect on health. Black tea, on the other hand, has more polymerized flavonoids (theaflavins and thearubigins) which are also health-boosting.
Tea doesn’t contain nearly as many calories as most other beverages. By replacing high-calorie sweetened drinks with tea, you’ll automatically be eliminating calories from your diet and helping your weight loss efforts. Read on for more weight-loss benefits of tea.
Green tea is made from the dry, nonfermented leaves of Camellia sinensis, a plant that contains hundreds of health-promoting compounds. These include catechins and caffeine, which are both thought to contribute to improved energy metabolism and can induce weight loss. Green tea preparations are extracts of green tea that contain higher concentrations of ingredients than the typical tea bag in boiling water. Catechins, particularly epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG; the most abundant catechin), are responsible for most of green tea’s weight loss properties.
How it promotes weight loss: Green tea’s antioxidants may help reduce harmful free radicals/oxidative stress, which contribute to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is strongly linked to obesity and is a major contributor to diabetes. Caffeine is a well-known stimulant that can help burn fat and improve exercise performance. The catechin EGCG also has a powerful effect on metabolism; it increases levels of hormones that tell your body’s fat cells to break down fat, which releases fat into your bloodstream to be used as energy.
Black tea is the most popular type of tea in the United States, comprising around 80% of all tea consumed. It is made from the same plant as green tea, but is prepared differently. Whereas green tea leaves are simply steamed and dried, black tea leaves are crushed. This results in simple catechins being converted to the more complex catechins like theaflavins and thearubigens.
How it promotes weight loss: Black tea flavonoids cause lipase inhibition. Fats can’t be digested without this enzyme, so some dietary fats get eliminated rather than absorbed. One study found that mice on a high-fat diet who ingested more black tea flavonoids lost more weight than those who ingested fewer. Black tea theaflavins have also been shown to boost metabolism; it takes around 50 mg of caffeine to increase the amount of energy your body uses at rest and black tea typically contains 30-80 mg.
These teas don’t contain any tea leaves or caffeine. They are made of herbs (as you might have guessed), fruits, seeds, or roots steeped in hot water. Some examples include peppermint, chamomile, and rooibos.
How it promotes weight loss: There’s less evidence regarding the health benefits of herbal teas, but using them to replace high-calorie beverages is an easy and healthy way to shed some pounds.

Hydration: Many people don’t drink enough water each day and prefer flavored or sweetened beverages. Tea is a great option to up your water intake without added sugar or calories.
Improved Complexion: Inflammation affects all your body’s cells, including those in your skin. Tea’s antioxidants can help reduce skin inflammation, redness, and blemishes. It can also boost your body’s natural detoxification system, promoting toxin removal through your pores.
Healthy Bones: Drinking tea might help strengthen and protect your bones. Tea has been linked to higher bone mineral density and improved muscle mass, which could reduce your risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
Improved Immunity: Tea may help prime your body’s immune system for action against harmful agents by teaching immune cells to recognize alkylamines – chemicals found in tea but also in some pathogens. And those flavonoids also play an important role in immunity.
Reduced Risk of Certain Diseases: Studies have linked tea consumption with protective effects against diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, and dementia.
If you’re not sure where to start, some excellent tea varieties include Connectivity (a lavender citrus green tea that aids in digestion and relieves migraines), Uplift (an apple and almond blend that promotes anti-aging), and Serenity (an antioxidant blend that helps reduce allergy and asthma symptoms).
To optimize your weight loss efforts, make sure you’re eating a well-balanced diet full of whole fruits and veggies, limit your intake of calorie-dense but nutrient-poor foods (fast food, processed food, soda, etc.), get regular exercise and drink plenty of water each day.
